Indian Passport Appointment Checklist for Newborns / Toddlers

Stepping out to run errands, playdates, doctor appointments or travel, its no longer as simple as to head out with your wallet and keys anymore, you need to think, plan ahead and pack the Baby Bag of Essentials now that you are a parent. So why would this be any different, it not as difficult as it sounds, in fact with a little prep and planning it could go by really smooth and hassle free. To help all new parents like myself I have come up with a checklist based on my own experience with my toddler recently and this makes it much easier.

"THE CHECKLIST" for Indian Passport Appointments for Newborns and Toddlers:

1.     Take the baby stroller or carrier, you will thank me later.

Expect long queues and wait times unless its off season or you are just lucky. While your token comes up, you have to wait between counters as well before you reach the end of the process you'll visit 3-4 counters. So take the stroller or at least a carrier so your baby can stay seated, nap and is easier on you to handle while strapped.

2.     Take your partner along:

The documents will be verified at multiple counters and also you may need to provide different ones as you progress, it will be difficult to manage the documents, child and the bags. If partner or spouse is not an option take your friend or relative. Almost all centres allow both parents and few allow others as well to help so try your luck.

3.     Pack the essentials:

Take the essentials like baby food, snacks, milk, diapers, change of clothes, burp cloths, and the absolute essentials. The last thing you want is to handle a cranky child during your appointment.

4.     Take the entertainment:

This is an absolute must, anything that keeps your baby hooked, calm or distracted enough so you can focus on the appointment. Whether it is a book, toy/s, tab, or gadgets make sure to pack it. Most toys (small) and devices (phones/tabs, kindle) are allowed but don't go overboard, keep it compact.

5.     Dress your baby appropriately:

This is very crucial, expect the place to be packed so don't over dress them in layers, unless you are in a very cold place or it's winter. Carry a jacket or blanket to use if needed but dress them comfortably so they don't get hot/cold and irritated.

6.     Keep yourself calm and organized:

Use the documents checklist on my previous blog on the passport application process for newborns and toddlers, make sure to keep all the originals and copies in order. Carry only essentials and dress for comfort as well so you can manage your baby and everything seamlessly. Lastly, its just an appointment, so don't over analyse, stay prepared, equipped and calm.
